Silver wedding anniversary
A silver wedding anniversary is celebrated after 25 years of marriage. Annual wedding anniversaries have been celebrated in Sweden since the 1700s. The first Swedish royal silver wedding anniversary was celebrated in 1740 by King Fredrik I and Queen Ulrika Eleonora, and the tradition has spread from rich people to the rest of society. Sometimes a party is held and sometimes the wedding ceremony is repeated. How a wedding anniversary is celebrated varies between countries but usually the greater the number of years, the more expensive are the materials used as a symbol. It is not unusual for the material to inspire the gifts or the theme of the celebration, such as silver for a silver wedding.
This photograph shows sea captain Frans Gustaf Andersson (1833-1920) and Johanna Catharina, née Lindbäck (1843-1908). They celebrated their silver wedding anniversary on 15 October 1895.
