Sture marker

Two round silver coins. This coin was called a Sturemarken (plural: Sturemarker). On the obverse (front) is a portrait of Sweden’s regent Sten Sture the Younger with a crown, halo, mantel, sword and sceptre. On the reverse is Sweden’s national coat of arms. We can also read that the coin was stamped in 1514 but this is not true. These are later copies.

There are only about ten real Sturemark coins left. They were Sweden’s first coin in the denomination of 1 mark. Confusingly, this coin was worth 1 1/3 marks, because the mark was both a unit of weight and a unit of currency. The coins are about 3 cm in diameter. One weighs 15.6 grams and the other 19.8 grams.GMK:329GMK:330
