Karl IX:s 20 marks

GMK:2136

A large round silver coin worth 20 marks. It has a diameter of over 5 cm and weighs almost 100 grams. On the front, Karl IX is depicted in full figure, clad in armor and a cloak, with a sword in one hand and the scepter in the other, but without a crown. He stands with legs apart, gazing to the side. Next to him, a key is crossed with a halberd, and above them is a crown.

Two lines of text encircle the image. On the innermost one is Karl IX’s motto, ‘Jehova (God) är min tröst’ (Jehovah is my comfort), and on the outer one is Karl’s royal title in Latin. At the top is also a small sun with wavy rays, and in the middle of it is the word ‘God’ in Hebrew characters. On the reverse side, there is Sweden’s large national coat of arms and two rows of the coats of arms of the contemporary Swedish provinces. The coin dates back to 1606.
