coin marking the founding of Gothenburg

A round silver coin worth 2 ½ riksdaler. On the coin is stamped the year 1610 but it was probably made in the 1660s to 1670s. The coin is called the 1610 praktpenning (literally: “splendid coin”) and is thought to have been presented as a medal and reward to foreign individuals who had helped to found Gothenburg.The coin’s obverse (front) shows an oak, which symbolises Gothenburg’s development.

Beside the tree is Kvarnberget hill, below is the river, and in the foreground is Älvsborg fortress. The reverse depicts Karl IX (Charles IX). The Latin text says: “the City of Gothenburg’s first founder and builder”.The coin is 5.7 cm in diameter and weighs 67.58 grams.
