Three square silver coins from 1568. The square format comes from the fact that a sheet of silver was stamped and then cut in pieces to create the coins.
On the obverse is a sheaf of grain, which is divided into three with a crown atop the middle section. The sheaf (“vase” in Swedish) is a symbol of Sweden’s Vasa royal dynasty. Other stamps are the number 6 and 8 plus an I for Duke Johan (John) and a C for Duke Karl (Charles).
Karl and Johan used the money to fund a rebellion against their brother, King Erik XIV. On the reverse are the three crowns of Sweden’s national coat of arms. The coins are stamped with their worth: 2 M, 4 M and 8 M.The coin worth 8 marks measures 3.4 x 3.4 cm and weighs 25 grams. The coin worth 4 marks is 2.4 x 2.4 cm and weighs 13 grams. The coin worth 2 marks is 2.2 x 2.2 cm and weighs 5 grams.
